Mini-Lesson: Rhetorical Pre-Knowledge — We will reconstruct magazine ads for different audiences to demonstrate what students already know about rhetoric, audience, commonplaces, etc.
Minor Persuasive Project (MPP) #1

Homework: Read ARCS (Ancient Rhetorics for Contemporary Students) Ch. 1, "Ancient Rhetorics." Write 5 - 10 "I believe" statements (e.g., "I believe children are innocent," "I believe that anyone can be president of the United States," "I believe God is individual and theistic.") These should be beliefs, not facts (e.g., "I believe the earth is round" would be a fact, not really a belief).

Homework: Read ARCS Ch. 4 ("Common Topics"). After reading, complete Minor Analysis Project (MAP) #1, due the following class period.

Discuss ARCS Ch. 4, using MAP#1 as our focus.

Homework: Read ARCS Ch. 2 ("Kairos") & Ch. 3 ("Stasis Theory"). After reading, complete MAP #2, due the following class period.

Dr. Banks violently ill; there was no class; students sat at home, lit candles in a quiet vigil for his safe and speedy recovery. There were wailing and gnashing of teeth, while sackcloth and ashes littered students' dorm rooms and apartments.

Homework: Read ARCS Ch. 5 ("Logical Proof"), Ch. 8 ("Extrinsic Proofs"), and Ch. 10 ("Arrangement"). At this point, you should be synthesizing your earlier work and constructing your Major Analysis Project.

Homework: Draft of Major Analytical Project Due for peer review/large group discussion. Be sure to bring at least 6 pages of text. Likewise, bring one of the main "texts" you're analyzing and be prepared to talk to the whole class about it.
