“Bloggable Possibilities for the Future of Composition
Studies: Reexamining Expressivisms, Queering Our Research Practices.” Draft under revision at Computers & Composition.
Co-Author (with Lynée Lewis Gaillet). Rhetorical Methodologies: Rethinking Research in Rhetoric & Composition. To be submitted to the Southern Illinois University Press, Fall 2010.
- Abstract: The primary “methods” book for teaching graduate students about the research practices of Rhetoric and Composition scholars is almost twenty years old; as such, it cannot introduce graduate students to disciplinary research as it currently stands. With this book, we seek to update the classic Kirsch and Sullivan text, Methods and Methodologies in Composition Research, by addressing gaps in our methodological knowledge and providing a “case book” at the end of the text. This “case book” will be a collection of essays that demonstrates “best practices” in the various methods of research our discipline employs.
Co-Author/Investigator (with Martha Marinara, Jonathan Alexander, and Samantha Blackmon). “On (Not) Being Part of the Program? Searching for Queer Representations in the work of Writing Program Administrators.” To be submitted to Writing Program Administration: Journal of the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA), Fall 2009.
- Abstract: This essay builds on our previous work on LGBT representations in composition textbooks and reports on a national survey of Writing Program Administrators and the types of work they are doing vis-à-vis integrating LGBT issues/texts/concerns/writers into first-year composition courses, as well as staff development/teacher training. This survey is currently on-going.
Co-Author/Investigator (with Martha Marinara, Jonathan Alexander, and Samantha Blackmon). “Composition in a Queer Key: Reports from the Field.” To be submitted to Journal of Advanced Composition (JAC), Fall 2009.
- Abstract: Growing out of the research involving surveys of WPAs and writing teachers, this essay offers rhetorical analyses of the stories that Lesbian-, Gay-, Bisexual-, Transgender- and Heterosexual-Identified teachers and administrators tell about their experiences integrating LGBT content into writing programs and individual classrooms.
Co-Author/Investigator (with Martha Marinara, Jonathan Alexander, and Samantha Blackmon). “The Queer Work of Writing Instruction: Inclusions/Exclusions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Topics in First-Year Composition.” To be submitted to College Composition & Communication (CCC), Spring 2010.
- Abstract: This essay takes our previous work on LGBT representations in composition textbooks and in the work Writing Program Administrators a step further and reports on a national survey of writing instructors and the types of work they are doing vis-à-vis integrating LGBT issues/texts/concerns/writers into first-year composition courses. This survey is currently on-going.
“When Literacy is a Literacy of the Self: Ethos, Performance, and the Adolescent Gay Boi.” To be submitted to Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Spring 2010. (Primary Author/Investigator)
- Abstract: This essay, which synthesizes empirical research gathered through surveys and interviews with adolescent gay male weblog writers (bloggers), demonstrates how the literacy practices that enable community and identification for queer youth are achieved primarily through interactions of image and text, interactions which require sophisticated rhetorical practices for reading both the alphabetic and the pictographic. The author argues that ethos becomes closely allied to post-modern performativity in order to develop a sexual literacy that queer youth learn in order to articulate a sense of self.
“A Rhetorical Outing: How Ethos Complicates Notions of Identity.” To be submitted to Rhetoric Review, Spring 2010. (Primary Author/Investigator)
- Abstract: This essay explores the ways in which post-modern rhetorics have created a dichotomy between practices of identification (which are seen as essentialist in a post-Cartesian epistemology) and subjectivity (which are seen as anti-essentialist). The author returns to sophistic and Aristotelian notions of ethos in order to construct a third term for disrupting this problematic binary. Ethos, the author argues, is inherently anti-essentialist, concerned with context and cultural constructions of self; however, rather than be merely relativist – because it relies on audience assumptions about a speaker or writer – ethos can be a productive term for re-enlivening a conversation about ethics, one centered in the complex interactions of self and Other.
