Lonelodge Publishes New Article

Sarah Lonelodge’s article “A Social Justice Facade: The Church of Scientology as a Pseudo-Countercultural Movement” and was recently published in the Lamar Journal of the Humanities. It centers on an analysis of the Church of Scientology’s rise during the 1950s and 1960s as an American countercultural movement grounded in social justice initiatives and the kairotic moment; however, my co-author and I argue that Scientology’s appeal as an organization involved in social justice work was/is only performative as internal documents indicate that the primary goals were/are recruitment, credibility, and driving profits.
