Shields’ Work Featured in ANQ

Dr. Tom Shields’ article “The First Literary Fictions of the 1587 Roanoke ‘Lost Colony’” was just published in ANQ: A Quarterly Journal of Short Articles, Notes and Reviews.

Shields identifies two works of literary fiction connected to the Lost Colony that hadn’t been identified before, an 1825 pamphlet narrative poem by John Robertson, Virginia: Or, the Fatal Patent, and an 1837 short story by Eliza Lanesford Cushing “Virginia Dare; Or, the Lost Colony: A Tale of the Early Settlers.” These are both earlier than the one that had been identified as the earliest before, Cornelia L. Tuthill’s short story “Virginia Dare: Or, the Colony of Roanoke.”
