Extracurriculars

The Department of English offers many activities that give you a chance to apply your learning and skills outside of the classroom: internships, study abroad programs, honor societies, and other student groups. Courses in English can also prepare you to participate in student publications, such as Rebel, Expressions, and The East Carolinian.

The East Carolinian

The East Carolinian is ECU’s student-produced newspaper and has been the campus news source since 1925. The student-run news organization produces a twice-weekly paper and online coverage of important events in the area.

English Club

The English Club is devoted to engaging students within the English department, as well as other departments, with the work the department is doing. This club is open to all students.

Expressions

Expressions magazine is ECU’s minority publication. It highlights diversity on campus and strives to broaden readers’ understanding of minorities in our community. There are 2,000 copies distributed across campus each Spring.

Creative Writing Club

The Creative Writing Club is open to all students and meets from 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays in the English Faculty Lounge.

Film Club

The ECU Film Club (We need text here for this organization. Not updated in 18 months.)

The Lookout

The Lookout is an undergraduate research journal focused on the humanities and medical humanities.

Rebel

Rebel is a literary and arts magazine produced by ECU students. The award-winning magazine recognizes the art and literary works of students. There are 2,000 copies distributed across campus each fall.

English Graduate Student Organization

The English Graduate Student Organization (EGSO) works to build a community of English graduate students at ECU and advocates on behalf of that community within the department. EGSO strives to include students and faculty from multiple concentrations in our academic and social events, fundraisers, and community activities. We welcome faculty volunteers who are interested in giving presentations, sharing professional advice, assisting at events, or hosting socials.

Doctoral English Student Organization

The Doctoral English Student Organization (DESO) provides support for and promotes interest in professionalization, networking, research, and publication of ECU’s Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication students. Membership is open part-time and full-time English doctoral students.
