Cariño Selected For Whitling Award

Alum Ina Cariño (BA English and Creative Writing Minor, ’16) is one of ten winners of the 2022 Whiting Award, a major national award for emerging writers that carries a $50,000 prize.

Ina Cariño is a queer Filipinx poet who was born in the Philippines. Ina’s work appears in Guernica, Diode, Poetry Northwest, Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review Daily, Waxwing, and New England Review, among other journals. They hold an MFA in creative writing from NC State and were a 2019 Kundiman fellow. In 2019, they founded Indigena Collective, a reading series and project centering othered and underrepresented creatives in the NC community. Ina’s book FEAST will be published in 2023 by Alica James Books.
