Cariño Wins George Bogin Memorial Award
Alum Ina Cariño (BA English and Creative Writing Minor, ’16), recent recipient of the Whiting Award, has received the George Bogin Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America. The award is given “For a selection of four or five poems that use language in an original way to reflect the encounter of the ordinary and the extraordinary and to take a stand against oppression in any of its forms.”
Cariño is a queer Filipinx poet who was born in the Philippines. Ina’s work appears in Guernica, Diode, Poetry Northwest, Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review Daily, Waxwing, and New England Review, among other journals. They hold an MFA in creative writing from NC State and were a 2019 Kundiman fellow. In 2019, they founded Indigena Collective, a reading series and project centering othered and underrepresented creatives in the NC community. Ina’s book FEAST will be published in 2023 by Alica James Books.
