Caswell Publishes Chapter on Writing Center Experience
Drs. Nikki Caswell published a chapter on her work in the writing center, “Centering Emotion at the Writing Center: An Approach to Tutor Training,” in the edited collection Literacy and Learning in Times of Crisis: Emergent Teaching Through Emergencies.
“This chapter focuses on how one university writing center responded to these two ongoing crises: COVID- 19 and systemic racism. Both crises required a collective response; however, higher education is built on the neoliberal idea of individual development. Part of our crises response was to push against the individual and turn toward the collective. The consultants’ professional development (PD) provided us the mechanism to make a collective turn since it offered consultants the space to educate, reflect, and act collectively. One way to shift from the individual to the collective is by embracing and centering emotion.”
