Harjo Appears as Part of the Big Read — Greenville
U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Mvskoke) will read from An American Sunrise and other works on March 30 at 7 p.m. at the Black Box Theater in the ECU Main Campus Student Center. The event is the culmination of the NEA Big Read Project.
An American Sunrise is more than the most recent poetic accomplishment by our nation’s poet laureate; it also contains archival documents of the challenges Harjo’s ancestors faced during the nineteenth century removal of the Creek Nation. The Big Read – Greenville aims to educate our community about the history of southeastern Indigenous peoples, enrich our community through cultural events related to tribal nations, and advance ECU’s regional mission to serve the public and transform our region.
